Did you know?
The station was designed by Charles Walter Clark.
Other interesting facts: It became the eastern terminus of the Metropolitan Line in 1941.
Other interesting facts: The construction of the station was on the site of a plague pit behind St. Botolph’s Aldgate, which contains an estimated 1,000 bodies. On that note, on 2004, July 7, one of four suicide bombers in terrorist attacks struck a C-stock Circle line train from Liverpool Street near Aldgate, killing seven passengers.
Aldgate Station is notable for its role in the Sherlock Holmes story “The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans,” where the body of a clerk with stolen submarine plans was found on its tracks, sparking Holmes’ curiosity about the lack of a ticket. This station also makes appearances in John Creasey’s detective novel “Gideon’s Day” and films like “Four in the Morning” (1965) and “V for Vendetta” (2006).
According to the HM Land Registry (12 October 2023), the average house price (over the last year) around the Aldgate station area was £736,655. However, if you consider renting, there are in between a £20,583 PCM (for a three-bedroom with en-suites and breath-taking views penthouse apartment) and a £200 (for a garage).
